Super Bowl party season kicks off
While next Sunday will be all about the game, Super Bowl week features more famous faces from Hollywood than New York and New England combined. Phoenix will be celebrity central as the Super Bowl parties figure to feature a variety of A-listers waiting out the writers' strike. USA TODAY's Scott Zucker spoke with TV star Catherine Bell (JAG, Army Wives), who's co-hosting the Snow Queen Vodka Leather & Laces Party on Friday night.
Q: You've described yourself as a tomboy growing up, what's your favorite sport?
A: I like football, but I'm not a huge fan. I like motorcycle racing. I have a motorcycle and so that's a lot of fun. I was a tomboy, I played touch football with the boys in junior high and I spent a lot of time at the skateboard park.
Q: You grew up in Southern California, were you a Rams fan?
A: I was a little bit (of a fan), but not huge. I was too busy running around outside, getting scrapped up on the skateboard.
Q: Speaking of the Rams, I keep reading stories about how you predicted the Patriots would upset the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI and even had the score correct. But there seems to be some confusion over when the prediction was made.
A: It was before the season. I was doing an interview and they asked. I turned to my husband, and asked him ‘What should I say?’ And he just came out with it. So I guess he really deserves the credit.
Q: So you've been riding his coattails all these years?
A: Yeah, well, he's a writer, so he always knows what to say.
Q: Have you been to the Super Bowl before?
A: I never been before. I'm really excited.
Q: What's the biggest sporting event you've attended?
A: I've been to Wimbledon. That was really great. You can get so close to the action.
Q: How did you come to host this party?
A: They called me and asked me if I'd come. It seemed like fun and there's a charity connected to it. (The Water Seeds Organization, which provides athletic equipment to wounded veterans). Anytime you can do some good for any charity it's worthwhile.
Q: I read that you're a golfer. Is the writers’ strike giving you a lot of time to play?
A: I'm on a show called Army Wives and we're obviously not filming now, so I've had time to play. But the weather has not been great.. I have a big tournament I play in every year. It's a celebrity pro-am and it's on the Golf Channel so there's some pressure there.
Q: Do you have a prediction for the game this year? Or should I ask your husband.
A: He's not here. I don't have a prediction. There are a lot of fans on both sides, so I don't want to make anybody unhappy.
Q: How are you keeping yourself busy during the writers' strike?
A: I'm staying busy. I've got my husband and my daughter, so I'm spending a lot of time with my family. I was in New York last weekend promoting a movie I did for the Hallmark Channel.
